To be able to request and consult archives you will need a County Archives Research Network ticket [CARN] - note that a Birmingham Libraries ticket is not acceptable for this purpose.
To obtain a CARN ticket Birmingham Archives and Heritage Service need to see proof of your identification. This should be an official document with your full name, printed address and signature, such as a driving licence. If you do not have a driving licence, you will need to bring two other documents:
- one item with your signature
- passport
- cash / cheque card
- credit card
Plus one item with your current printed address:
- bank statement
- gas, electric, water or telephone bill
- medical card
- council tax statement
- social security book
You will need your CARN ticket every time you visit Birmingham Archives which can be used at all other offices in the County Archive Research Network. The ticket lasts for 4 years.
Certain categories of material which are unique, rare, valuable, fragile, or vulnerable to theft or damage and which were previously served in the Local Studies and History section are now made available in the new Secure Research Room on Floor 6 of Birmingham Central Library:
- all photographs, slides, engraved portraits
- special collections such as pre 1800 printed books, the Cotton, Loudon, Priestley collections and early directories and army lists
- sales catalogues
- trade catalogues and cards
- bound newspapers
- postcard collection
- bound pamphlets
- manuscript maps, rolled maps including railway plans and pre-1850 maps and atlases
ephemera collection
- certain parts of the Birmingham Collection including Aston Villa and Birmingham FC programmes, pre 1970 minutes, Birmingham Theatre playbills and posters, Sport and Play newspaper, The Dart, The Owl
